Overview
Deriva Energy, previously Duke Energy Renewables, manages a 5,900 MW portfolio of wind, solar, and storage assets. To achieve operational independence and future growth, Deriva partnered with PSC to help transition from legacy systems to a modern SCADA infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted operations while developing a scalable and resilient control environment.
Challenge
Deriva’s transition posed significant technical and organizational challenges:
- Migrating SCADA operations from Duke Energy to Deriva Energy within a compressed 10-month timeline.
- Integrating Inter-Control Center Communications Protocol (ICCP) links with four RTOs and four regional utility partners.
- Maintaining uninterrupted operations across a geographically dispersed asset base.
- Establishing a new operational control center, including virtualized infrastructure and data centers.
Solution
PSC delivered a robust SCADA solution, including:
- Quad-redundant SCADA and ICCP nodes for high availability.
- Virtual infrastructure deployed across Virginia and Georgia for resilience and scalability.
- Seamless data integration with GE Historian and Aviva PI.
- ICCP commissioning with multiple RTOs and utilities for secure telemetry and control.
